I started my career in nursing in 1991 and following graduation as a Registered Nurse - Adult, I worked within the fields of Neurological Rehabilitation and Neonatal Intensive Care – although diverse areas of nursing practice, the philosophy of person centred, individualised care has always been central to my practice and these clinical specialities allowed me to develop my knowledge and skills. The absolute privilege of supporting people whilst experiencing during their most challenging times, has taught me that authentic connection is the essence of nursing practice.
Having worked clinically and whilst supporting students, I developed a keen interest in legal and ethical issues within clinical practice and undertook a MA in Medicine, Law and Ethics followed by a Post Garduate Certificate in Education teaching qualification. I began my career within Higher Education in 2002 where I have worked as Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing. I firmly believe that promoting excellence in education has a direct link to excellence in patient care and I attempt to champion innovative, inclusive, evidence based practice whilst engaging students in an interactive teaching and learning.
My teaching interests include professional practice, law and ethics, communication skills, leadership and teaching and learning. My research interests focus on ethics at the end of life, the student experience and creative teaching and learning approaches.
My experience as a Senior Lecturer has enabled me to embraced a multitude of roles, including lead for Student and Staff Support, collaborative working at a strategic level with practice colleagues, programme leadership, unit/module leadership and development, external examiner and external advisor, and curriculum development, delivery and design.
I am passionate about my role as an educator within nursing and believe that praxis can promote excellence.
