Generative AI in Research and Knowledge Exchange

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly being used throughout the research lifecycle, including:

  • literature reviewing
  • study design
  • coding
  • data analysis
  • dissemination
  • public engagement

Whilst these technologies offer significant opportunities, they also raise important ethical, legal, methodological and governance considerations.

LJMU has developed guidance to support the responsible, transparent and accountable use of GenAI in research and knowledge exchange (RKE) activities. The guidance is intended for LJMU staff and postgraduate researchers and should be used alongside relevant University policies and procedures relating to:

  • research ethics
  • research integrity
  • data protection
  • information governance
  • intellectual property
  • academic conduct

The guidance includes information on:

  • responsible and ethical use of GenAI in research and knowledge exchange
  • data protection, confidentiality and information governance requirements
  • intellectual property and copyright considerations
  • use of GenAI with research data, including qualitative data
  • research ethics and governance requirements
  • transparency, reproducibility and reporting expectations
  • synthetic media (AI-generated images, audio and video)
  • practical examples, decision-support tools and a researcher checklist

Researchers remain responsible for the accuracy, integrity and ethical conduct of their work when using GenAI. This guidance will help researchers make informed decisions about when and how GenAI can be used appropriately within research and knowledge exchange activities.
