Academic Visitors

Academic Visitor status can be requested for academic colleagues from other institutions to reflect the collaborative nature of academia, without bestowing an honorary title. Academic Visitors are usually granted access to LJMU systems and buildings for a short period of time not exceeding 12 months.

The granting of Academic Visitor status carries no remuneration, but LJMU will normally provide the individual access to the university libraries and selected IT services (for example an LJMU email address), as appropriate and subject to any licensing arrangements.

It is essential that the school, faculty or research institute give proper consideration in advance to the potential resource implications arising from hosting an Academic Visitor. This may include, for example, access to office or laboratory space, or specialist equipment and facilities. It is the responsibility of the school, research institute or faculty to ensure that the Academic Visitor fully understands what will be provided locally and to ensure they are advised that they should abide by LJMU policies, procedures and values whilst using LJMU resources or on campus.

Prior to inviting an Academic Visitor, the Academic Visitor request form (Word, 38.2KB) should be completed and approved by the School or Department Director, Head of Operations (in faculties) and final sign off by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise. Once the appropriate approvals are in place, the form will be submitted to Human Resources who will confirm with the nominating employee the outcome of their request and write to the Academic Visitor to advise of the duration of their status and access to LJMU systems and buildings.

Advice on the process can be sought by contacting HRCoordinator@ljmu.ac.uk or by phoning 0151 351 9559.

International Academic Visitors

For visitors who are coming to the university from outside of the UK or Ireland, it is likely that they will be required to gain entry to the UK under an immigration category that is appropriate for the agreed activity. In most instances this will require LJMU to provide the visitor with a formal letter of invitation to facilitate UK visa or visitor entry requirements. The link here provides a guide to which type of visa is required and what the visa allows an individual to do whilst visiting the UK. Some international visitors will need to apply for an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate and may be subject to Export Control legislation. The visa application process can take a considerable amount of time and the duration will vary based on individual circumstances. The costs and administration associated with visas are the responsibility of the individual Academic Visitor and advice can be sought by contacting HRCoordinator@ljmu.ac.uk.
