Russian press visit University as part of British Council event

Russian journalists visited LJMU as part of a tour of UK education establishments, organised by the British Council.

The press trip was a whirlwind tour of the UK, with the reporters also visiting Imperial College, the London School of Arts and the University of Portsmouth.

At LJMU the journalists were shown the Liverpool Screen School facilities, including the TV studios, Broadcast Hub and newsrooms.

Anna Sazonova, of Russian education website www.mel.fm, commented: “These facilities are fantastic, they are up-to-date and exactly like those in professional TV and radio studios, giving students brilliant learning opportunities. I studied at Moscow State University and then went to work in TV and I didn’t have access to any facilities like those at LJMU before I started work. It is preparing students for the real world and I believe it is the right thing to do. The biggest difference I have noticed between Higher Education in Russia and the UK is that there is a lot more focus on practical training here, whereas in Russia there is more concentration on theory. I definitely think practical experience is invaluable.”

The reporters were also given a tour of the facilities in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology including the ship simulators and the three full-scale ‘eco-houses’.

As part of the trip the Russian press members also enjoyed a bus tour of the city and visited The Everyman and Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.

The visit from the Russian journalists followed a recent report published by UUK on the internationalisation of UK higher education which revealed that the export earnings generated by international students in the North West during 2014-15 was a substantial £970m, the largest amount generated outside of London and the South East.
