When you arrive

Steps to follow when arriving in the UK

Follow the steps below to move through the airport smoothly.

  1. Step 1: Pass through immigration (Passport Control)

At Passport Control, a UK Border Officer may ask to see:

    • a passport valid for your stay in the UK
    • your visa or entry clearance
    • evidence of financial support (bank statement or sponsor letter)
    • your Liverpool John Moores University offer or acceptance letter
    • recent academic certificates or results
    • your UK address and contact details

Before leaving immigration, check your passport has been stamped (if applicable). For detailed guidance, visit UKCISA's Visas and immigration webpage.

Use eGates for faster entry (if eligible)

Many students can enter the UK using automated eGates, which means you may not need to speak to a Border Force Officer.

You can usually use eGates if you:

    • have a biometric passport
    • are aged 12 or over (12 to 17-year-olds must travel with an adult)
    • are a citizen of the UK, EU, or countries including Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland or the USA
    • are a Registered Traveller
  2. Step 2: Collect your luggage

    After immigration:

    1. Follow signs to Baggage Reclaim
    2. Check screens for your flight number
    3. Collect your luggage from the carousel

    Tip:
Label your bags clearly so they are easy to identify.

If your luggage is missing, speak to your airline representative immediately and complete a lost baggage report before leaving the airport.

  3. Step 3: Go through customs

After collecting your luggage, choose the correct exit:

    • Green channel - nothing to declare.
    • Red channel - items to declare.
    • Blue channel - arrivals from within the European Economic Area (EEA).

If you are carrying £6,750 or more in cash or equivalent, you must declare it. Failure to declare funds may result in a fine. You are legally required to comply with customs searches if requested.

Step 4: Airport pick-up service

We offer a free airport transfer for new LJMU students arriving for the first time from Manchester Airport (MAN) and Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL). Book via the Applicant Hub at least four working days before travel. Once confirmed, you will receive taxi details by email.

Please note:
The airport pick-up service is not available for partnership exchange or study abroad students.

  1. Step 5: Enrolling at LJMU

All new students must complete online enrolment to receive:

    • your timetable
    • student ID card
    • access to university systems

You will receive instructions by email explaining how to upload your documents and complete enrolment.
