Get ready for your journey to Liverpool

We are excited to welcome you to Liverpool John Moores University. These steps will help you prepare for travelling to the UK and settling into Liverpool smoothly.

  1. Step 1: Tell us when you are arriving

    Log into the Applicant hub.

    Once you have logged into the Applicant hub you will need to:

    • book your free airport pick-up (available for arrivals at Manchester or Liverpool airports)
    • register for your mandatory International Welcome programme
    • watch the visa and pre-departure guidance video located under 'My Actions'

Step 2: Prepare your documents

Keep all important documents in your hand luggage, not your suitcase.

  • Passport and visa documents.
  • University offer and confirmation details.
  • Accommodation confirmation.
  • Travel tickets and insurance.
  • Medical or vaccination records (if required).
  1. Step 3. Pack smart

    Luggage allowance

    Check your airline baggage limit before travelling. Most airlines allow 20kg checked luggage plus hand luggage.

    Clothing

    Liverpool has a mild but changeable climate.

    • Summer: warm but rarely hot.
    • Autumn and spring: cool and rainy.
    • Winter: cold, sometimes below freezing.

    Many students choose to buy winter clothing after arriving in the UK.

    Items you cannot bring into the UK
    UK border rules prohibit certain foods, includingmeat and fish, plants, honey and dairy products.
    Liverpool has many international supermarkets where you can buy familiar foods easily. Check GOV.UK for the latest restrictions before travelling.

    Electrical items

    • UK plugs are Type G (three-pin).
    • Bring adapters if it is convenient.
    • Ensure your valuable electronics are insured during travel.

Step 4: Travel safely

  • Always keep your luggage with you.
  • Keep valuables out of sight.
  • Never carry items through customs for someone else.
  • Do not leave bags unattended.
  • Avoid travelling to unfamiliar places with people you’ve just met.
  • Use only licensed taxis from official taxi ranks.
  • If you need help, speak to airport or station staff.
  1. Step 5: Getting to Liverpool

    Travelling by train

    Liverpool is easily accessible by train from all major cities in the UK, the journey from London will take just over two hours. 

    The Merseyrail train network has excellent links across Liverpool and to other parts of the city region.

    Travelling by air

    Liverpool John Lennon Airport is only seven miles from the city centre. 

    Manchester Airport is just a 45-minute drive. 

    There are public transport connections from both airports.

    Travelling by car or coach

    Liverpool city region is well connected to the UK motorway network. From the M6 take the M62, M58 or M56 to reach the city centre.

    National Express coaches operate routes from cities across the UK.
