Paul joined LJMU as Professor in September 2024.
Paul's research specialisms span the arts. He has particular interests in film, architecture, literature, and music.
Paul is author of the books The Cultural Construction of London’s East End (2008) and British Films of the 1970s (2013), and editor of Don’t Look Now: British Cinema in the 1970s (2011), British Rural Landscapes on Film (2016) and British Art Cinema (with Brian Hoyle, 2019). Paul is currently working on research which looks at the relationship between film and architecture.

Paul composes, records and releases music as 'Clevelode'. The album 'Muntjac' was released by Fenny Compton in July 2024: a 'mix of songform and questing experimentation': Derek Walmsley (The Wire, July 2024).
