I have combined academia and policing for four decades. I have a BSc in Sociology, a Masters in Criminology together with a Post-Graduate Diploma in Policing from Cambridge. My degrees took me from studying police discretion during the 80's inner city riots to the politicisation of policing during the 84/85 Miner's Strike.

A strategic thinking police officer for over 30 years, 13 of which were served as a Chief Officer I served with both Greater Manchester Police and Cheshire Constabulary. I also spent two years working for Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary. Following retirement from policing in 2018 I worked as a Community Engagement specialist working in the space between local communities and the state.

Passionate about neighbourhood policing and delivering strong and safe communities, I have been nationally recognised for the creation of community focused policing systems and delivering collaborative solutions to crime. From developing national strategies to tackle serious violence to the development of asset led policing I strongly believe that it is the partnership between residents and policing that will build safe and resilient communities.

I was the national policing lead for Restorative Justice, Stalking and Anti-Semitism, leading strategic change programmes and introduced national policy & legislative change. I also have a track record of delivering effective leadership and critical incident management across major criminal and disorder events including command roles in the response to the 2017 Manchester Arena Suicide Bombing, managing the response to the 2011 Manchester & Salford riots and the subsequent multi-agency recovery, and the policing of the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

I bring to LJMU a unique blend of senior police leadership experience with the effective application of organisational and criminological theory to the design and delivery of policing and criminal justice systems.

At LCAPs I have been responsible for the design and delivery of the Degree Holder Entry Programmes for both Merseyside Police and, nationally, Police Now. These programmes are designed to develop expertise amongst a new generation of police officers specialising in either community based leadership or investigation.
