Helen has worked at Liverpool John Moores University since January 2024. She teaches on numerous modules within the pre-registration nursing team. She previously worked at The University of Bolton as a Lecturer on the children's nursing team.

Helen completed a First Class BSc (Hons) Degree in Children's Nursing in 2013. She then took on a role as staff nurse at The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital on a very busy general medical ward where she gained lots of experience in caring for sick children and their families. She then moved onto work at Alder Hey Children's Hospital where she worked on a ward that specialised in respiratory, gastroenterology and renal. Helen worked there for eight years before changing her career path into academia. Academia has always been a passion of hers.

Research is something she really enjoys especially exploring children and their families in regards to the respiratory system and how air pollution and living conditions play a major role in this.

She had the privilege of undertaking a research project at Alder Hey Children's Hospital where she worked alongside the respiratory consultant, physiotherapist, senior pharmacist and a children's psychologist. The project consisted of collecting data around children with asthma and how exercise is an important factor in controlling children's asthma; ensuring their housing was free of damp and mould and assessing their medications to ensure their asthma is fully controlled. At the end of the project which was funded by the Health Foundation it proved that children who participate in regular exercise have a better quality of life and less hospital admissions with exacerbation of asthma. The project was such a success that the Health Foundation agreed to continue funding this project for the foreseeable future.
