Elsie Gaskell has been a member of teaching staff within the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences since 2006. As a Senior Lecturer she is actively involved in the teaching and learning on two undergraduate programmes: Masters of Pharmacy (MPharm) and Pharmaceutical Sciences (PharmSci). She teaches across a number of different modules at each level of study. Elsie holds a PgCert HE (distinction) and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Elsie’s current administrative roles include module leader of the 120-credit Level 4 MPharm module, Integrated Foundations of Pharmacy (4000IMPHAR). In 2015 she was awarded the Individual Teaching Award by the University.

Elsie is a member of the Formulation and Drug Development (FDD) research group. Her current research interests are in the development of novel antimicrobial clay composites for wound care. Wound management with the aid of natural clay minerals has been documented. A new approach to wound management would be to design novel, synthetic antimicrobial materials related to the natural remedies. The work done within the FDD research group aims to investigate the properties of various synthetic clays alongside other natural clays, as well as to exploit their inherent ability to ion-exchange and intercalate clinically useful drug molecules to produce a bioinorganic hybrid drug delivery system.
