I gained my first degree, a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science, from the University of Bradford. I went on to work as a Biomedical Scientist, during which time I gained Master’s degrees in both Pathological Sciences and Molecular Biology. I then undertook my PhD in Geomicrobiology and Geochemistry at the University of Manchester, which involved engineering a whole-cell Escherichia coli biocatalyst for chemical transformations, and an investigation into the bioreduction of precious metals for use as functional nanomaterials. Following the completion of my PhD I worked as a Senior Research Associate at the University of East Anglia, investigating engineered biofilm formation, antibiotic production, and chemical transformations.
In 2012 I moved back to the northwest to join LJMU School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences as a Lecturer in Virology and Microbiology. I teach across a range of programmes including Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Biology, and postgraduate Virology. I am module leader for Laboratory Investigation of Disease A, and the postgraduate modules Principles of Virology and Viral Infections of the Respiratory and Alimentary Tracts.
