Dr. Mosharraf Sarker is a Human Physiologist with a keen focus on unravelling the intricate mechanisms of mammalian cell signalling in response to oxidative stress, inflammation, and microvascular permeability. He is also interested in the role of the microbiome in the regulation of inflammation. His academic journey began with undergraduate and Master of Science degrees in Medical Physiology from the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research, Dhaka, Bangladesh, spanning from 1982 to 1987. Dr. Sarker earned his PhD in vascular Physiology from King’s College London in 1995, delving deep into the complexities of brain microvascular permeability regulation to inflammatory mediators. Following his PhD, he embarked on two postdoctoral research fellowships supported by the Wellcome Trust, honing his expertise in the field, including islet microcirculation in the pancreas. Dr. Sarker's academic contributions extended globally, encompassing teaching roles at the Pharmacy Department, Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, and honorary lectureships at the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London (UCL, 2010-2020), and the Cardiovascular Division, King’s College London (until 2023). His tenure at Teesside University, from 2001 to 2023, saw him as a dedicated lecturer in Human Biology, actively engaged in research management as a postgraduate tutor and chairing the research degrees subcommittee. Additionally, he led undergraduate final-year research projects, served as a module leader, and contributed as a program leader for the MRes in Science, BSc Human Biology, and BSc Health Sciences programs. In July 2023, Dr. Sarker transitioned to Liverpool John Moores University, joining the faculty of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to advancing scientific understanding and nurturing the next generation of researchers and academics.
