I have worked at LJMU for 12 years, in both central and faculty-based Professional Services roles within: Student Recruitment, Learning and Teaching and Student Advice. Currently I Co-Chair the National Strategy Group of the National Network for the Education of Care Leavers and Co-Chair LJMU’s staff LGBT+ Network. I believe that with the knowledge, skills and experience I have developed in these roles, I would make a positive contribution to the Academic Board supporting the delivery of the four core aims of our University’s Strategic Plan 2017 – 2022.

I have worked at Liverpool John Moores University since October 1996 in the School of Art & Design. Over this period, I have witnessed many changes and acquired much knowledge about university procedures, policies, departments and people. This will be the foundation for my period as Member of the Academic Board, should I be successful in my application. LJMU, its staff and students are important to me. I wish to help with shaping the future of the university and its policies, and in supporting the environment for research, scholarship, learning and teaching.
Steven Spittle – Senior Lecturer in Media & Cultural Theory
I am a Senior Lecturer within the Faculty of Arts, Professional and Social Studies. At this time of considerable change and uncertainty within the sector, and at LJMU, I would like to offer my voice and experience to the Board and the wider University community. I have worked in four universities over the last twenty-four years and have undertaken several External Examiner positions at a broad range of Higher Education Institutions, including: Sheffield Hallam, Wolverhampton University and UEA. I am committed to the quality and equality of experience for both staff and students within LJMU and I believe that maintaining and improving this experience should be the guiding principle underpinning change.

My experience of working in four universities, senior fellowship of HEA, PhD studentship and external examining role would enable me to guide, advise and assure academic governance. I would work hard to maintain our core values, aims and performance against KPIs, in the current challenging HE context, ensuring Liverpool John Moores University remains positive, welcoming and socially engaged.
I am an excellent registered nurse and lecturer. I would bring leadership, emphasising partnership with students and championing equality and diversity (Athena SWAN), to the Academic Board. I would help plan, co-ordinate, develop and supervise the future academic work of our university.

Recent changes in the HE environment is causing LJMU to re-evaluate how we maximise our students’ teaching and learning experience. During this time of change, I believe it is imperative to create policies, frameworks and processes that support and develop staff in order to create conditions that fulfil student expectation whilst achieving organisational goals. However, I am concerned that decisions without staff input and holistic thinking can create conditions that increase workload and disengagement, leading to lower performance. As a member of the Academic Board, I will endeavour to champion the needs of our students, staff and organisational impact.

During my 18 years at LJMU, I have been programme leader (7 years), sat on validation panels, education committees and have mirrored these activities externally. Recognition of my work has come through awards of National Teaching Fellow (2010) and Reader in Individual Differences in Education (2016/7). My application is based on commitment to improving the student experience and enhancing the quality of learning, teaching and assessment. Much on my work and planned pedagogical research synchronises with the current LJMU teaching and learning strategy principles (2017-2022). These include cultural awareness, technology and VLE, partnership and collaboration, innovation, research-informed curriculum and employability.
