In memoriam: Professor John Somauroo

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Professor John Somauroo.

John was a Professor of Cardiology with us whilst also working as a consultant cardiologist, and sport and exercise cardiologist, at Liverpool Heart and Chest and Countess of Chester Hospitals.

John was also the cardiac consultant with Liverpool Football Club and worked closely with the medical teams on match days. John was also a member of the Football Association’s cardiac screening panel. John was a world-renowned sport cardiology expert and has been a key part of our cardiovascular health sciences research group for many years.

He was heavily involved in the mass cardiac screening projects that have been undertaken within professional football and rugby. In addition, John has helped set up pre-participation screening clinics in Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and more recently in Egypt.

John was an exceptional practitioner and a truly wonderful person with an infectious sense of humour and who was always willing to go out of his way to help everyone.

John, surrounded by his family, died of cancer on 14 May 2020. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.
