Graduate Tutor Trainees join Positive Action Programme



Four year trainee programme for Ethnically Diverse staff

Six Graduate Tutor Trainees have begun a four-year programme at LJMU to gain invaluable teaching experience and strengthen the university's representation of Ethnically Diverse staff. 

The six chosen trainees were selected from 136 applicants, from ethnically diverse backgrounds, who applied for the Positive Action: Graduate Trainee Tutor programme.  

The trainees will spend the next four years completing their PhDs and undertaking a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) while gaining invaluable teaching experience, with the full support of their respective departmental teams. 

The six graduate trainees who are completing their programmes across the university: 

Victoria Jeehoo Kim, Calvin Moore and Pabby Johnson are working within Liverpool Business School and will be line managed by Professor Tim Nichol, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Faculty of Business and Law, Tunde Durowoju, Scott Foster, Katie Hyslop, Ian Fillis and Adam Shore

Lila Tamea and Chantelle Lunt are working within the School of Education with line managers, Dr Graham Downes, Subject Head for Education and Early Childhood Studies and Dr Ceri Daniels, Director of School of Education and Sana Rizvi

K-Ryan Hinds is completing the traineeship within the Astrophysics Research Institute with line manager Ndy Ekere, Pro-Vice Chancellor Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Professor Matt Darnley, Head of Teaching at the Astrophysics Research Institute, Shiho Kobayashi, Stacey Habergham-Mawson and Marie Martig

Event held at Student Life Building 

An event was held in the Student Life Building to celebrate three months since the programme began and for the Graduate Tutor Trainees to share what they had already learnt.  

Professor Mark Power, Vice- Chancellor of LJMU, welcomed the trainee tutors. He said: 

“You are at the start of a very exciting journey and a real opportunity. Remember as part of this journey, you are never alone. Make sure you ask questions, come forward with your ideas and embrace the opportunity. We’re so passionate about this programme and are committed to making it a success with you all.” 

Chantelle Lunt, one of the graduate trainees completing the programme within the School of Education, said: 

“I really want to pursue an academic career and the Graduate Trainee Tutor is the perfect opportunity to do that. Not only is it a good pathway to an academic career but I also get to complete a PhD at the same time. As someone who has been at LJMU since my undergraduate degree, I can’t think of a better place or more supportive community to complete this opportunity in.” 

Positive Action Programme

The Graduate Trainee Tutor programme is the second stage of LJMU’s Positive Action Programme which saw 12 trainees from ethnically diverse background complete a two year programme within professional services. 

Due to the success of the programme, the Diversity and Inclusion team plan to run the Positive Action Programme again for those interested in a career within professional services, alongside the Graduate Trainee Tutor Programme, for those interested in academia.
