More than 300 students get health and wellbeing boost with sport nutrition support



More than 300 students have taken part in a series of sport nutrition workshops aimed at equipping them with accessible and effective strategies for meal planning and preparation that fit around busy student lifestyles.  

Delivered in collaboration between the Performance Sport department in the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences and LJMU Sport, the 1-2-1 practical sports nutrition sessions hosted at the Sports Building were led by the university's sport nutrition specialists, Erick Mosquera Lopez and Sam Taylor, supported by sport and exercise science student interns and headed by Dr Carl Langan-Evans.

Highlights included sessions called ‘Smart bites: budget-friendly meal prep’ and ‘Overnight success: quick breakfasts for busy students’ offering practical solutions for students to take forwards into their everyday routines, to support their studies and their overall wellbeing.

Initial feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with students praising the interactive format and actionable takeaways. One student said: “Everything was excellent. Every team member was so supportive and now I feel confident in identifying trustworthy supplements and choosing the right ones for my needs.”


The enthusiasm shown by attendees is a testament to the growing awareness of how nutrition impacts both academic and athletic performance.

Anna-Marie Brown, LJMU Head of Sport and Physical Activity, said: “Using our sports facilities as a conduit to support our students is invaluable. The buzz has been fantastic as our students have appreciated this whole concept. Our next step is to replicate this winning recipe elsewhere across our student living venues”. 

Conor Heeney, Performance Sport Science Coordinator, said: “Working with LJMU Sport and Performance Sport has been a great opportunity to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application. These workshops allow our undergraduate and postgraduate sport and exercise science students to apply what they’ve learned in a real-world setting while supporting the wider student population. It’s encouraging to see this collaboration having a positive impact on both student wellbeing and performance.”
