School pupils inspired by female associate deans' leadership journeys

Extraordinary leadership journeys of our Associate Deans

This month, as part of our International Women’s Day celebrations, seven of our female associate deans shared their extraordinary career journeys with local school children, staff, and students.

The audience were predominately 13 to 15-year-old female students from local schools; the Academy Of St Francis Of Assisi,  Childwall Sports & Science Academy, Lifesciences UTC and The Studio Liverpool.

Becoming an empowering female leader

Seven of LJMU's Associate Deans including Dr. Alison Lui, Elaine Hemers, Dr T. Komang Ralebitso-Senior, Dr Robyn Pyne, Dr Maureen Royce, Dr Denise Lee and Sarah Maclennan spoke to the audience about their own careers and lives, discussing:

  • How to deal with setbacks

  • Overcoming glass ceilings

  • How to become an empowering female leader

The students also asked questions to the panel and reflected on their own lives and the ways in which they already lead.

The event, hosted by the Diversity and Inclusion team and chaired by Professor Raphaela Kane and Professor Philip Vickerman, received amazing feedback from the schools, who said, “It was an absolute pleasure for our young girls to be able to listen to strong, empowering women.”

Moni Akinsanya, Associate Director Diversity and Inclusion said:

"We were delighted to collaborate with the Outreach team in welcoming young girls from Liverpool's widening participation schools to LJMU. We had discussions about leadership, the path to higher education, breaking barriers and overcoming glass ceilings. It was inspiring to see these girls eagerly participate and ask questions to the PVCs and Associate Deans about leadership. This event beautifully highlighted LJMU as a great place to study or work."
