LJMU showcases advanced practice training to NHS partners

NHS partners from across the North West met with postgraduate health students at LJMU to see how they are applying their advanced clinical skills in the workplace alongside their studies.

More than 50 students undertaking master’s study in advanced clinical practice, including those studying via a degree apprenticeship, as well as recent graduates, showcased change in practice innovations and evidence-based projects during an inaugural one-day event hosted by the university.

Key health partners from the region in attendance included those from NHS England, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, Arrowe Park Hospital, Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Trust.

The students are undertaking their studies part-time alongside trainee advanced practitioner roles in specialities such as stroke, gastroenterology, and haematology. Through their learning they are gaining additional skills underpinned by the four pillars of advanced practice – clinical practice, education, leadership and management, and research - ultimately helping to improve patient care and enhance outcomes in the region.

Joanna Lavery, Senior Lecturer and Programme Lead for the Advanced Clinical Practice Apprenticeship at LJMU’s School of Nursing and Advanced Practice, said: “This event is important to promote peer support and development for the postgraduate and advanced practice students at LJMU.

“It is also an opportunity to celebrate the successful journey of our fantastic learners and showcase innovations and collaborative working between students, practice partners and the LJMU team. 

“The innovations presented clearly demonstrate clinical excellence at local and national level. We hope that events such as this will help to establish strong health partnerships and support the advanced clinical practice and continuing professional development portfolios at LJMU.”

Staff presentations during the event included those from Professor Ian Jones on the importance of research in advanced practice, Sue Baker on innovations in endoscopy and Dr Julie Hayes on next steps beyond postgraduate education including the professional doctorate pathway.
