Supported Internships: could your team support an intern?

Empowering young talent and driving positive change at LJMU
Following the success of the Intern to Work project, the Diversity and Inclusion team’s next programme of supported internships is back and is looking for departments and staff to take on an intern for two days a week, for ten weeks, starting this April.
The Intern to Work project is a collaborative inclusion project between LJMU and Liverpool City Council (LCC) to provide supported internships for students in the Liverpool City Region (LCR) with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). The project came about through the support of the Diversity and Inclusion Funds 2023-2024 and won the Best Partnership Working Award from Liverpool City Council in 2024.
The next round of Supported Internships, led by the Diversity and Inclusion Team under the guidance of Paula McNulty (project lead of Intern to Work), will begin with placements at the Forest School and Catering Department. In partnership with Liverpool City College, these placements will provide interns with practical life skills and meaningful work experiences to support their transition into employment.

We are excited to invite departments across LJMU to participate in the next round of this transformative initiative.
How to get involved
The Diversity and Inclusion team is looking for departments that can provide two days a week of meaningful work experience for an intern, from 10am to 4pm.
The next round of internships will begin this April, lasting for 10 weeks. An additional programme will also begin in September 2025 for six months.
This is a fantastic opportunity to create a lasting impact while also enhancing your department's working environment. If you are interested in getting involved or would like more information, please contact the Diversity and Inclusion Team at equality@ljmu.ac.uk.
Why get involved?

- Enhance team cohesion: Hosting an intern can cultivate a more inclusive and supportive atmosphere within your team, promoting increased empathy, understanding, and collaboration among members.
- New Insights: Interns introduce fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and varied viewpoints that can significantly impact your department's approach to tasks and challenges.
- Assistance from LJMU: The programme is supported by a skilled job coach, ensuring that both the interns and your department receive valuable guidance and assistance throughout the experience.
