Peter O'Reilly is a Lecturer in International Relations and Politics. He joined LJMU in April 2020 as a Research Associate, working on the AHRC funded project 'Regionalism in East Africa, c.1900 to present', before being appointed to his current role in January 2022. Prior to that he was an Associate Lecturer at the Department of Politics, University of York, where he also completed his PhD in 2019.
Broadly, his research interests are on the political economy of trade and regional integration in Africa, with a specific focus on the East African region. His current research focuses on three areas. One explores the growing tensions that have emerged in recent years between state-led development strategies and regional integration in the East African Community, which he is currently writing a research monograph on. A second is examining civil society engagement in the East African Community, looking specifically at why civil society networks mobilise and advocate for issues through regional institutions. This work forms part of the research he conducted on the AHRC funded project mentioned above. A final, and more recent area of research, is exploring the politics of local pharmaceutical production in Africa in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. This research is in collaboration with Peg Murray-Evans and Jake Wood at the University of York.
