Faculty of Engineering and Technology

I am the Programme Leader for the MSc Astrophysics by distance learning course ran by the Astrophysics Research Institute at Liverpool John Moores University. A unique course which allows students around the world to engage with the cutting edge research of our department through a fully online masters course.

I am also the Project Manager for The Schools Observatory (www.schoolsobservatory.org) an educational outreach project opening Access to the Universe for All. For over 15 years the project has given schools across the UK and Ireland direct access to the Liverpool Telescope, for free. Engaging millions of young people and their educators along the way.

My research background is in core-collapse supernovae and their host galaxies in our local Universe. My observational studies connected the local stellar populations with the flavour of stellar explosion. Supernovae are some of the brightest events in our Universe, but the fact remains that until they explode we can rarely ever see the individual stars which are behind such amazing light displays. We need to carry out some detective work - combining clues from the local galaxy environment, with the unique signals received during the explosion to work out what happened. Only by doing this can we answer the question of how stars evolve and the physics entwined in the explosion dynamics. Supernovae are the source of almost all of the elements in the periodic table, - elements which allowed for the Earth and life to be created. They recycle the leftovers of space into something new. They are able to help us probe distances, chemistries and extreme physics.

I am also the chair of the Science and Technology Facilities Council Public Engagement Spark and Legacy awards panels.

I am a former vice-president and councillor of the Royal Astronomical Society where I was also Diversity Champion, and chaired the diversity committee for a number of years.

I am active in the field of diversity and inclusion holding various positions during the last 9 years: chair and member of the departmental EDI committee, member of the Faculty DI committee, decolonising the curriculum lead for the department.
