Martin Sharp gained his PhD from Imperial College in 1985 and then went into the laser industry. From 1985 to 1990 he worked at two laser system companies, Control Laser Ltd. (1985-87) and JK Lasers / Lumonics (1987 to 1990). From 1990 to 1994 Martin worked in a subcontract laser processing venture with AEA Technology. The company closed in 1994, and for the following six years Martin run his own laser consultancy / service business. This included the installation, training and subsequent support of several laser cutting systems in the UK and Europe. In 2000 he joined University of Liverpool to manage their Lairdside Laser Engineering Centre, undertaking a number of funded research projects, commercial contracts and hosting MSc projects.
In 2008 Martin joined the General Engineering Research Institute at Liverpool John Moores University to run a laser processing research group. In 2011, Martin began teaching Manufacturing and Materials and Product Design Engineering in the School of Engineering, as well as teaching Physics for the faculty wide Foundation programme. Martin Sharp is a past President of the Association of Laser Users (AILU) (2011-2013) and is a member of the UK Photonics Leadership Group.
Martin retired from the University in July 2021, and is now a visiting research fellow supporting several PhD students and materials processing activities in the laser labs.
