Kurannen is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering and Built Environment at Liverpool John Moores University where he teaches primarily Building Surveying and Facilities Management courses. Kurannen is also currently a THIS Institute Research Fellow with The Healthcare Improvement Studies (THIS) Institute, University of Cambridge where he has received £101,137 in research funding to carryout research on sustainable healthcare waste management within the NHS. Kurannen has authored several publications in international peer reviewed journals on primarily healthcare waste management, building refurbishment, and fire safety in buildings. He has presented papers at various international conferences and has also done guest speaking at various seminars/workshops. His research interests include sustainable facilities management (waste management), strategic facilities management, sustainable building refurbishment and adaptation, fire safety in buildings. Kurannen holds a National Diploma (ND) in Estate Management from Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna, Nigeria, a Higher National Diploma (HND) also in Estate Management from Kaduna Polytechnic, a Master of Facilities and Maintenance Management (MFMM) (with Distinction) from University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and a PhD in Asset and Facilities Management also from the University of Malaya. He is a Graduate Member of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, an Ordinary Member of the Malaysian Association of Facility Management and a certified Category 1 Thermographer.
