Gabriela is a Reader in Statistics for Healthcare at the Department of Applied Mathematics at Liverpool John Moores University. Her research focus is advanced statistics for decision support, particularly with applications to personalised medicine, public health, ophthalmology, neuroscience, cancer epidemiology and medical imaging. Her research group has developed statistical methods for the diagnosis of glaucoma from retinal images. She has worked as a Lecturer at the University of Liverpool (2012-2018), a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Warwick (2010-2012, 2007-2008), the University of Oxford (2009-2010), Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital (2004-2007). She obtained PhD in Statistics at the University of Pittsburgh, USA (2004), an MA in Economics at the University of Pittsburgh, USA (1999) and an MSc in Mathematical Statistics, Probability and Computer Science at Comenius University in Slovakia in 1994.

The primary aim of research in the ophthalmic statistics group is the development of a novel methodology to design and analyse ophthalmic studies. Currently, we are addressing many key challenges in inference and prediction from observational studies that contain images collected from the retina or cornea. Current research projects include:
1) Spatial statistical models clinical images to help understand ophthalmic diseases: their aetiology, progression, and causality.
2) Longitudinal and spatio-temporal models for early detection, screening and monitoring of diseases to assist clinical decision-making and help deliver optimised patient management strategies.
3) Signal-to-noise ratio metrics for evaluation of the signal in the complex data and for feature extraction: derive novel AI-driven biomarkers.

I am always looking for new students to work on exciting projects. Please send any enquiries via email or LinkedIn.
