CPD Independent and Supplementary Prescribing

During this course, you will explore issues most relevant to prescribing, including:

• consultation, history taking and decision-making
• influences on and psychology of prescribing
• prescribing in a team context and sharing information
• evidence-based practice and clinical governance in relation to non medical prescribing
• legal, policy and ethical aspects
• professional accountability and responsibility
• prescribing in the public health context

This part-time programme is delivered over 16 weeks and includes 26 days of theory and 12 days of clinical practice. The number of intakes per year is determined by the number of places commissioned. Intakes are either September to January or January to May.

Qualification requirements

• Undergraduate degree

  Students applying to complete the independent and supplementary prescribing qualification at level 7 should have evidence of previous degree level study. 

• Relevant work experience

  Students must be registered with either NMC as a Nurse (level 1)/Midwife/SCPHN, or HCPC with a minimum of 1 years post registration experience in the clinical field in which they are intending to prescribe.

You will be assessed via:

• a reflective portfolio
• a written examination: multichoice and short answer questions
• achievement of practice-based competencies
• objective structured clinical examination numeracy test

This Continuing Professional Development course is stand-alone and is not within a wider award framework.
