LJMU Maritime Centre

Formerly the Lairdside Maritime Centre

Helping to meet the training, education and research needs of the maritime industry.

Liverpool John Moores University’s Maritime Centre is rooted in two centuries of Liverpool’s maritime heritage – delivers exceptional courses that have produced countless deck officers and marine engineers.

Maritime Centre, a major pillar of the Global Centre for Maritime Innovation (GCMI), launched in 2024 to drive decarbonisation, autonomous systems and port innovation; a £659k simulator upgrade enhancing digital infrastructure; and bespoke simulator training for Mersey Ferry crews on the new £26m Royal Daffodil.

Through the £5m MaLaMi project and TWaSP research on wind-assisted propulsion, the Centre combines teaching excellence with real-world learning, equipping students to shape the industry’s sustainable future.

Our expertise

The Maritime Centre provides tailored training, consultancy, and research support for the global industry, utilising state-of-the-art facilities and bespoke packages.

A key asset is our proven expertise in developing detailed ship and port models for our advanced simulator – recognised as one of Europe’s most sophisticated. This platform immerses delegates in authentic conditions, including realistic equipment faults and complex manoeuvring challenges that test rapid, effective responses.

Beyond simulation, we rigorously bridge theory and practice. Every action and choice made during exercises is meticulously reviewed in comprehensive debrief sessions, allowing participants to compare outcomes and analyse alternative strategies. This reflective process yields unique, actionable insights unobtainable elsewhere, ensuring lasting professional growth.
