In Memoriam: Andreas Whittam Smith 1937-2025

The university is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Andreas Whittam Smith, co-founder of the Independent and Honorary Fellow of LJMU.

Journalist and editor, Sir Andreas also led British Board of Film Classification and served as senior lay member of the Church of England.

His death on Saturday, prompted fulsome tributes across much of the media for a man described as cerebral, non-conformist and kind.

Schooled in Birkenhead, he was made an honorary fellow of LJMU in 2001 and features in a long line of Merseyside journalists with connections to LJMU.

He had a connection with the media studies students and gave masterclasses alongside Sir Phil Redmond who ran a series at LJMU entitled: View from the Top.
