Paid Discovery Internships now open for applications from second and final year students

We are offering second and final year (Level 5 and 6) undergraduate students the opportunity to apply for a Discovery Internship working with an organisation in the local area. You are paid a living wage for the internship, which can be completed part-time alongside your studies.  

The 100-hour internships offer the opportunity to work on a real-life project that will enhance your employability skills and career insight, enable you to gain valuable work experience and help expand your professional network.

Discovery Internships are sourced by the LJMU Student Futures team and are advertised via Unitemps, LJMU's own recruitment agency. You must be registered with LJMU's Unitemps branch to apply. 

There are three rounds of Discovery Internships each academic year with around 50 to 60 internships available in each round. Eligible students can apply for a maximum of three internships in each round but are only permitted to be funded to complete one Discovery Internship in an academic year.

Internships timeline

• Applications open on Monday 14 September 
• Applications close at 11.59pm on Sunday 27 September  
• Interviews with host organisation to take place before Wednesday 14 October
• Start dates from the week beginning Monday 19 October (this may vary depending on the role) 

If you are successful in securing an internship, your working pattern will be agreed with the host organisation, but the 100 hours must be completed by no later than Friday 18 December 2026.

Please note: the second round of Discovery Internships will be available in late-November and the final round in late-February/early March 2027.

If you need help with your application, or want support preparing for an interview, you can book a 30-minute careers meeting with a Careers and Employability Adviser from the Student Futures team.

Alternatively, come along to a ‘Ask Student Futures’ drop-in for any quick queries about your application(s). Drop-ins take place every Tuesday and Thursday at both the Student Life Building Careers Zone and Byrom Street Careers Zone from 2pm to 3pm.
