Built Environment and Sustainable Technologies Research Institute (BEST)

BEST focuses on tackling sustainable practices through the development of innovative technologies and strategies, tailored to each stakeholder at local, regional, national and international levels, in line with the UN SDGs and Grand Challenges.

The Built Environment and Sustainable Technologies (BEST) Research Institute comprises of staff from the School of Civil Engineering and Built Environment within the Faculty of Engineering and Technology and was formally recognised by the University as a research institute in 2010. 

Driven by a commitment to societal impact, BEST fosters a collaborative and inclusive research environment. We attract external funding, publish high-quality research aligned with REF, and actively engage in knowledge exchange and dissemination. Our aim is to develop innovative and user-centred solutions that address real-world challenges and enhance the relevance and impact of our research findings for the benefit of UK society and our communities.

Our responsibilities include leading research projects, supporting grant applications, supervising PhD students, and teaching.
