Who we are
LiRICS – the Liverpool Research Institute for Climate and Sustainability is LJMU’s university wide focal point for climate and sustainability research and knowledge exchange.
We bring together world leading expertise from our faculties, schools and research institutes centres and groups to form a single, visible hub for climate and sustainability.
Acting as a collaborative platform we work with external partners to facilitate engagement and develop impact initiatives that address real-world climate and sustainability challenges. Underpinning this is LJMU’s Climate Action Plan which sets out the university’s commitment to work towards a net carbon zero future.
What we do
LJMU and its partners have strengths in climate and sustainability research and knowledge exchange across areas including the built environment, maritime futures, digital innovation, climate migration, education and natural capital.
Through our cross-disciplinary research networks, LiRICS connects expertise from across the university to accelerate research, knowledge exchange and partnership activity that delivers real-world impact.
We work with policymakers, businesses, public sector organisations and communities to inform policy and practice, support behaviour change, and drive sustainable development locally, nationally and globally.

Why it matters
Climate change and sustainability are among the defining challenges of our time, affecting every aspect of society. Building a resilient, low-carbon economy is essential to creating sustainable jobs, improving wellbeing, and ensuring that the benefits of the transition are shared equitably across communities.
