Get to know student support

Joining a university can be a really exciting yet daunting experience for many students. At LJMU, we want to make sure the transition is as easy as possible. We are here to help and we have dedicated teams to support you during your time at LJMU.

Student advice and wellbeing

From help around student funding to dealing with homesickness and disability-related support, the student advice and wellbeing team offers a wide range of support to all students. You can speak to student advice and wellbeing advisors in the Student Life Building on our Mount Pleasant Campus or the James Parsons Building on our City Campus, just stop by anytime Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm. Appointments can also be booked across campus and virtually via Teams or telephone.

Don’t hesitate to email the relevant team if you have questions before you start your studies:

Discover more information on the Student Advice and Wellbeing webpages.

Registering with a doctor

It’s vital that you register with a doctor, often referred to as a GP, as soon as your place at LJMU is confirmed. GPs are your first point of call for most health issues. If you are not from Liverpool, you can still see your own doctor when you go home.

If you wish, you can register now with Brownlow Health who have GPs in the city centre or at the Freshers Fair on Friday 18 September 2026. If you prefer, you can search for other local GPs using the NHS online GP finder.

Vaccinations

It’s important to look after your health when living away from home. Vaccinations are more important than ever in helping to protect yourself and our community. The following vaccinations are recommended for university students:

  • Meningococcal ACWY (Meningitis ACWY) immunisation.
  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) immunisation.
  • Flu vaccination (for certain at-risk groups).
  • HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) vaccinations.

MenB vaccine and meningitis symptoms

While the Meningitis ACWY vaccine protects against four strains of meningococcal infection known as MenA, MenC, MenW and MenY, it does not protect against MenB which was the cause of a 2026 outbreak linked to the University of Kent. Currently only infants (born after 1 July 2015) receive the MenB vaccine as part of the NHS routine immunisation schedule, although the MenB vaccine is available privately if you wish to also get this vaccine.

From 20 July 2026, the MenB vaccine will be offered to teenagers aged 17 or 18 who are born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008 and to young people aged 24 or under who are starting university. You'll be able to book an appointment online or go to a walk-in vaccination site and get vaccinated without an appointment.

Early symptoms of meningitis can be similar to common illnesses such as flu or even a hangover, it’s easy to mistake meningitis for something else but it’s important that you get immediate help. Get familiar with the symptoms in case you or a university friend becomes ill. The Meningitis Now website offers clear information on symptoms and how to get help.

Keeping you safe

Liverpool is a safe place and has had Purple Flag status for over 15 years. This is awarded to places that promote the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.

Your safety and wellbeing is very important to us at LJMU, we are always updating our safety measures. If you need help or want to speak to a trained member of staff about any concerns, we are here to help:

  • The Student Life Building is open 24/7 with LJMU security staff always on site.
  • The university security team emergency phone number will be on the back of your student ID card if you need help on campus 0151 231 2222 and we would encourage you to download our SafeZone app which will give you quick access to the team at the touch of a button. Whether you need urgent help, first aid, or just some advice, SafeZone ensures support is always nearby.
  • We also have a university police officer, PC Martin Triggs, who you can speak to in confidence. He’s in the Student Life Building every Monday, Thursday and Friday from 10am to 2pm, or you can email him martin.triggs@merseyside.police.uk.

Zero tolerance on harassment and sexual misconduct at LJMU

We recognise that incidents of harassment and sexual misconduct can unfortunately occur both within and beyond the university. This type of behaviour will not be tolerated, and we are committed to promoting a culture in which these incidents will be addressed.

We have created an online guide of all the provisions in place to address harassment and sexual misconduct within our university community.

To enable all of our students to enjoy their student experience in an atmosphere of mutual respect and ensuring zero tolerance of these issues, we are asking all new students to complete our bespoke training package related to this matter. The modules can be found on your Canvas dashboard – your virtual learning environment accessed online or via the Canvas app - and are entitled ‘Harassment and sexual misconduct’. Please complete the online training once you have completed your student registration and prior to attending your first week of study, so that you can protect yourself and others.

Report and Support

We also have an online reporting tool called Report and Support so that any member of our university community can report incidents of harassment and sexual misconduct. Reports can be made anonymously (if no support is needed) or you are encouraged to include your contact details so that our full range of support is available to you. The university has a range of staff in place to respond to any reports, and this includes specially trained Sexual Violence Liaison Advisors.
