Jasmine Howard

Jasmine is a fashion design and communication graduate with a deep interest in vintage fashion and costume. From reading fashion history books at just 9-years-old to now making her own clothes and recreating 60’s dresses using original patterns. “My favourite decade of all time has to be the 1960s because I just love the silhouettes, the knee-high boots, and the awesome makeup.”

She spent five years studying with LJMU and aside from honing her passion for fashion, she was also engaged in many other parts of uni life, taking up the presidency of the Vintage Fashion Society and the Book Society, as well as serving as the Vice President of the Casual Sports Society.

So, taking on the role of President of Liverpool John Moores Students’ Union (JMSU) seems like a natural next step for Jasmine.

She takes on the role in the later half of our Bicentenary year and Jasmine’s manifesto has a keen focus on supporting today’s students through the variety of challenges they might face. For instance, she hopes to organise fundraisers to provide financial support to society members that might otherwise not be able to afford to get involved in sometimes costly social activities and events.

As someone with a disability herself, she also hopes to make a difference by setting up a new ‘issues inbox’ where students can email in their concerns and seek advice and guidance.

“Think of me as a JMSU Agony Aunt! Being a student with a disability myself, I understand the importance of being able to seek advice,” says Jasmine.

Jasmine’s ambitions don’t just sit within the campus bounds of LJMU, she also wants to give back to the community through visit schemes with local care homes. She envisages that the initiative would encourage students to volunteer and form friendships with care home residents through in-person visits and correspondence through letters, helping to brighten their lives with warm interactions crossing conventional generational boundaries.

Outside of LJMU and her role as President of JMSU, Jasmine is using the skills and knowledge learnt through her studies to further her career within fashion and journalism. She works as a content creator at Jardin Living, and writes weekly articles for Fashion on the Beat, a fashion magazine that values equity, transparency, and wellness. Fashion On The Beat strives to become a decentralised editorial hub that embraces and respects the work, passion, and dedication of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Jasmine has also previously contributed content to Mindless Mag and authored articles for Empoword Journalism.

As if Jasmine isn’t already busy enough, she also teaches cello to both children and adults through Tutorful!

Jasmine's experience, dedication to inclusivity, equity and community, and her ambitions as president really echo the university’s own ethos and values, to be student-focused, inclusive, caring about the community and courageous.

As for the future, Jasmine said: “I am aiming to give back to the community via volunteering schemes and supporting students living with hidden disabilities and I am looking to pursue a career as a fashion historian.”
