LJMU rewarded for environmental commitment

LJMU has been rewarded for its commitment to environmental management and sustainability on campus.

The university has gained bronze status from EcoCampus, an environmental management scheme for higher and further education.

The initiative recognises LJMU’s progress in developing environmental processes in line with international management system standards. Specifically, the university has demonstrated the commitment of our senior leadership to the environmental agenda, identified training requirements and undertaken a review of environmental risks and opportunities, such as emissions and discharges.

LJMU’s commitment to sustainability and environmental management on campus is shown by the wide range of green initiatives across our estate, which have seen us cut our carbon emissions by half, recycle two thirds of our waste and use 100% renewable electricity.

Awarding Bronze status, EcoCampus noted: “LJMU is in a strong position to progress to the EcoCampus Silver Phase, with strong senior management support and the integration of environmental considerations into the wider sustainability context at both institutional and departmental level.”

Professor Phil Vickerman, LJMU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Strategic Initiatives), said: “The award by EcoCampus is another welcome endorsement of the great progress we are making in the crucial area of environmental management and sustainability at LJMU.

“This is a key priority for us at LJMU and we will continue to take a whole university approach to integrating sustainability into every aspect of our work.”

This award comes soon after the recent success of the university in the 2021 People and Planet University League.
