In memoriam: Professor James L Ford

The University is sad to announce the death of Professor James L Ford.

Members of our community will have their own fond stories of Jim, who was well known for his booming laugh and wicked sense of humour.

Jim graduated from the then Liverpool Polytechnic with a BSc Pharmacy degree and stayed to complete a PhD.  Remaining at the Polytechnic, he joined as an academic member of the Pharmacy team on the 2 September 1974.   He worked up the ranks to Professor and then School Director, not leaving the University until 31 August 2012.  His career spanned a total of almost 38 years.

A larger than life character, Jim was also known for his love of cricket, fishing, Tranmere Rovers and eclectic and quite unique taste in music.  He loved a concert and would join colleagues in supporting his favourite, and some more unusual bands playing live.  Board of Governor Representative and Jim’s ex Personal Assistant Emily Walker’s favourite memory of Jim was him "rocking out in his office to Neil Young and doing air guitar. He will be remembered him with great fondness as a great School Director and a really supportive colleague."

Throughout his career, Jim remained passionate about Pharmacy and the profession.  He was a great advocate for the 'Industrial Pharmacist', but also had a great understanding of all major strands of the profession and was a highly regarded practitioner.  Professor Charles Morecroft recounted that “Jim always had a story to tell, whether this was about his fishing exploits, his challenges on the golf course, his experiences of academic life or meeting with LJMU student alumni. He always had time to give, albeit a few minutes here and there or a little longer if the situation required it."

The University sends its condolences and love to his wife Linda and their family, at this very sad time.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be confirmed but please contact Aly Leigh if you would like to be updated when details are available.
