New humanities and social sciences research centre

A new LJMU research centre will bring together expertise around humanities and social sciences to drive forward the impact of their work.

The Liverpool Centre for Cultural, Social and Political Research (CSPR) has been established to deliver outstanding research and impact, high quality publications, secure external funding and develop new collaborative links.

The CSPR creates a multidisciplinary research space for colleagues from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), Liverpool Business School (LBS), Liverpool Screen School (LSS), the School of Education (SoE) and other HSS departments.

A key objective for CSPR is to build an enhanced research culture to support the development and submission of case studies for REF 2029.

The shape and scope of CSPR has been informed by an extensive consultation process with colleagues, which revealed a desire from staff for a centre that encourages them to do more, fosters connections beyond teaching and promotes interdisciplinary learning.

Centre to be led by three co-directors

There are initially 45 interdisciplinary researchers in CSPR, led by co-directors Dr Matthew Alan Hill, Dr Jo Knowles and Professor Sara Parker.

Co-Director Dr Matthew Alan Hill said: “The establishment of the Liverpool Centre for Cultural, Social and Political Research is an opportunity for us to build upon our research strengths and successes across humanities and social sciences. Integral to that is creating a space for local and regional policymakers to engage with our excellent colleagues so they can provide their expertise in helping understand and resolve the challenges we face.”

Co-Director Professor Sara Parker commented: “Through our consultation with staff, we believe the creation of CSPR as a central hub will enable us to enhance our already vibrant research culture by fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and creating new opportunities for researchers.

Co-Director Dr Jo Knowles added: “The centre will support the strategic aims of LJMU’s submission for REF 2029 and further enhance the university’s research culture, capability and impact.”

Four thematic working groups

The centre will feature four thematic working groups:

• International Studies
• Applied Political, Social and Cultural Research
• Cultural and Textual Studies
• Politics, Policy, and Polity
