LJMU ranks in top 60 UK universities for Sustainable Development Goals

The rankings also place LJMU in the top 400 internationally and top six in the North West

Liverpool John Moores University has ranked 301st to 400th internationally in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, for its commitment to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.  

This is the first year the university has submitted to THE Impact Rankings and the results also place LJMU in the top 60 UK universities and top six universities in the North West, alongside University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Liverpool, UCLAN and Lancaster University. 

1963 universities across the globe were scored in the Times Higher Impact Rankings, which are the only global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with Western Sydney University, Australia top of the rankings.  

The rankings use key indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparison across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach and teaching. 

Top 25% internationally  

Of the seven goals LJMU submitted in the rankings, the university performed in the top 25% internationally for six of the goals, and above the median in the 7th, with an overall score of 78.5% out of 100.  

LJMU made a submission on their evidence for 7 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals including: 

3. Good Health and Wellbeing

4. Quality Education

12. Responsible consumption and production 

13. Climate action 

15. Life on land 

16. Peace, justice and strong institutions  

17. Partnerships for the goals. 

LJMU’s partnerships for the goals came out as the strongest performing category with supporting evidence including LJMU’s orangutan conservation monitoring, the UK Malaysia University Consortium and the ‘Dignity Without Danger’ project, which works with NGOs to destigmatise period shame in Nepal.  

Professor Keith George, Pro-Vice- Chancellor Research and Knowledge Exchange and Chair of the Sustainable Development Goals Steering Group, said:

“This year is the first time the university has submitted to the Times Higher Rankings and to be ranked in the top quarter of international institutions is an achievement that the whole university community can be proud of.  

“It’s been a true team effort to provide the evidence for LJMU’s submission and I’d like to thank all staff and students involved for their hard work in highlighting the university’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals. 

“And it doesn't end here. We are continuously planning work that showcases how our research, student experience and partnerships are working towards a more sustainable future on a local and global scale.”
