Student journalist covers England Red Roses' World Cup victory

A third year Sports Journalism student got the opportunity of a lifetime reporting on the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup.

Third-year Sport Journalism student, Alfie Bugg, has been working over the past month as an intern for the Rugby News Service and was selected to work the final week of the Women’s Rugby World Cup at Twickenham.

Incredible experience of a World Cup final

The final saw England’s Red Roses beat Canada with a 33-13 win, in front of 80,000 spectators.

Alfie said:  “I was part of the record-breaking crowd inside the stadium that witnessed England lift the World Cup and was one of the first people to speak to the players after the match to get their instant reaction.”

Alfie applied for the opportunity through his LJMU Sport Journalism course and over the past month has had the opportunity to interview teams at media days, and prepare match briefings as well as speak to the then current World Champions New Zealand as well as a host of other countries including Canada, Australia, Japan and the USA.

He continued: “Working at such a high-profile tournament meant a lot of national journalists were also reporting at the event. I learned a lot from their expertise and found it really interesting to see how they operate in the professional environment.

“I’ve come away from the tournament with new connections and the incredible experience of working on a world cup final.”
