From Charity to Solidarity: A Radical Return to True Christian Justice
How should the church respond to growing poverty in the new era? What lessons does the church still need to learn? Whose side is the church really on?
These are the seismic questions that Jenny Sinclair grapples with forty years on from the Faith in the City report. In this 12th Annual Micah Lecture, Jenny Sinclair reads the signs of the times and describes a new way to return to the truest sense of Christian justice.
Reflecting upon the distinct and sacred role of the church, Jenny Sinclair uses the lens of Catholic social teaching to shift our understanding of what it means to do justice in this time of unravelling.
Jenny Sinclair is Founder and Director of Together for the Common Good (T4CG), a Christian charity dedicated to spiritual and civic renewal. Drawing on Catholic Social Thought, T4CG resources Christian leaders and churches across all denominations, as well as schools and charities, to read the signs of the times and play their part for the common good. She writes and speaks about the vocation of the church in society, and is co-host of Leaving Egypt, a transatlantic podcast exploring what it means to be God’s people in times of unravelling. Daughter of the late David Sheppard, Anglican Bishop of Liverpool, Jenny was received into the Catholic Church in 1988.
Liverpool Cathedral is a community committed to justice and kindness. The annual Micah Lecture is an opportunity to invite prominent public figures to speak about social justice. This is the 12th social justice Micah Lecture; previous speakers include Dr Eve Poole, Bishop Steven Croft, Bishop David Walker, Bishop Pete Wilcox, Bishop Paul Bayes, Canon Lucy Winkett, Ann Morisy, Angus Richie, Dr Ruth Valerio, Chine McDonald, Dr Steven Horne and Rev Professor Kelly Brown Douglas.
The Micah Lecture is organised by Liverpool Cathedral on behalf of its charity Micah Liverpool in partnership with the Diocese of Liverpool and Together Liverpool as part of the Faith in the City 40th year anniversary.
