Influencers boost LJMU's pioneering Cosmetic Science

With beauty and toiletry sales up to £10.3 billion in the UK last year, employment in the cosmetic industry is growing, pushed by social media influences, and booming skincare, colour, fragrance and beauty products.

These are good times for LJMU’s BSc Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Science and our field-leading Masters course.

The MSc in Cosmetic Science, in particular, stands out because it has just become the first of its kind in the UK to achieve accreditation with seven commendations from the Royal Society of Chemistry.

By successfully securing accreditation for five years, this cements our position as UK leader in Cosmetic Science as we are the first and only MSc Cosmetic Science programme in the UK to be accredited.

Dr Amanda Boddis, Programme Leader MSc Cosmetic Science, said: “We were the first university to offer a MSc Cosmetic Science programme in 2017 and I am very proud that it is now the first and only cosmetic science programme to be accredited in the UK.

“The RSC were so positive and supportive throughout the accreditation process.”

The commendations included:

  • A very specialised course that is well-constructed giving a broad oversight of the training needed in the industry.
  • Exceptional industrial engagement and work placements.
  • The students have access to extensive and modern pieces of instrumentation.

LJMUs Cosmetic Science MSc provides postgraduates with expertise in formulation, testing and regulation and has been designed in consultation with industry.

Amanda and her colleagues form part of the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences - one of the oldest and well-established schools of pharmacy in the world.

Dr Steve Enoch, Head of Subject Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, said: “I am really delighted with this accreditation and would like to congratulate Amanda, the teaching and technical teams and our industrial partners who all work extremely hard to make this programme a success.”

Students on the MSc Cosmetic Science experience frequent 'fact-finding' visits to industry, including recent trips to Lush Liverpool - the company's largest store - and Croda International, which provides ingredients for skins care, hair care and sun care products.
