Ian's national recognition for outstanding teaching
Dr Ian Sadler, an academic in the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, has gained national recognition for his outstanding contribution to teaching and learning.
He has been announced as a winner of the prestigious National Teaching Fellowship.
Outstanding contribution to student outcomes in UK higher education
The national scheme, run by Advance HE, celebrates individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to student outcomes in UK higher education.
Ian Sadler is Subject Head with responsibility for learning and teaching and teaches exercise physiology and nutrition. His research focuses upon learning and teaching in higher education; specifically teacher development and assessment practice.
He is currently part of the Advance HE Degree Standards project team which has developed and delivered national training for external examiners. This has also included a subject specific version for sport science external examiners.
Ian has extensive experience of undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum development and has led Faculty wide projects related to assessment and student research. Externally, Ian is part of a number of BASES committees based on his expertise in pedagogy and has been on the panel for numerous validation events.
Advance HE announced 61 new National Teaching Fellows nationwide.
Ian was recently featured in our report on Catapult Sports where sport science students are taught to use state-of-the-art technology to analyse the performance of athletes.

The prestigious 2025 award for Dr Ian Sadler coincides with the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences' celebrations as it marks 50 years of sport science and half a century since launching the UK’s first sports science degree.
