LJMU plays key role in fight against heart disease

LJMU is supporting individuals and communities, both in the city and internationally to look after their hearts.

Cardiovascular disease and stroke are a major healthcare burden, disproportionately affecting people across the Liverpool City Region.

LJMU is one of the founding members of the Liverpool Centre for Cardiovascular Science which aims to tackle high levels of cardiac disease and helping people live longer, healthier lives.

Pioneering research

The university and our academics are instrumental in ground-breaking research in the cardiovascular field.

Our UKRI-funded TARGET research project is currently developing cutting edge AI technology to track and prevent strokes and atrial fibrillation, the most common heart arrhythmia worldwide. Improving the population’s health and preventing illness and disease is key to reducing health inequalities and is at the heart of the NHS’s long term plan.

Our involvement in the Heart Research UK project is also helping heart patients with exercise programmes and wearable technology which aims to increase participation in post-hospital rehab programmes. Cardiologists believe incentivising these rehabilitation regimes could ultimately prevent early deaths.

Training the next generation of health care professionals

The university is one of the largest training providers in the north for essential health and wellbeing services. Our programmes train the next generation of nurses, paramedic, midwives, and other health care professionals to deliver the highest standards of care for those affected.

The university also offers continuing professional development qualifications to ensure lifelong learning is available for individuals while also addressing the needs of the health care workforce.

LJMU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mark Power, said:

"I am proud that our university is playing such a key role in the fight against heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions.

"Our work aims to change people’s lives, both locally and on an international scale, so that individuals can go on to live longer and healthier lives.

"As a founding member of the Liverpool Centre of Cardiovascular Science, we are committed to tackling the challenges of cardiovascular conditions through pioneering research and by training the next generation of health professionals.

"This work aligns with the NHS’s 10-year plan prioritising prevention and supporting a shift in not only treating illness, but preventing it in the first place.”
