Celebrating Ramadan at LJMU
As Ramadan begins this week, we want to warmly recognise this special month with our Muslim students and staff.
Ramadan is a meaningful time of reflection, prayer, charity and community for Muslims around the world. It is also a time that invites shared understanding, compassion and connection across our whole university community.
What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. During this month, many Muslims fast from dawn until sunset. Fasting is a time to focus on faith, gratitude, patience and care for others.
Each evening, families and communities gather for Iftar (the meal that breaks the fast).
We recognise that while Ramadan can be spiritually uplifting, it can also be physically demanding. At LJMU, we want our Muslim students and colleagues to know that you are supported and respected during this month and throughout the year.
Join Us for Ramaday: Wednesday 25 February
To mark Ramadan together, we are hosting Ramaday on Wednesday 25 February at 5.30pm in the Student Life Building.
Organised in partnership with LJMU Islamic Society (ISOC), John Moores Students' Union (JMSU) and the Diversity and Inclusion Team, Ramaday is open to everyone - Muslim and non-Muslim students and staff alike.
If you are not Muslim, you are warmly invited to take part in a voluntary fast during the day as a way of standing in solidarity with our Muslim peers and learning more about their experience. You may choose to fast for an hour, a few hours or the whole day - whatever feels right for you. If fasting is not possible, you can still join us. The most important thing is coming together.
The evening will centre around a shared Iftar, where we will break the fast together in a welcoming and inclusive space. There will also be prayers led by ISOC and a light-hearted quiz with prizes.
Arwa Daaboul, President of LJMU Islamic Society comments:
“Ramaday is a chance for students and staff to experience the spirit of Ramadan first-hand, through reflection, community, and shared understanding. We hope it gives everyone a meaningful insight into why this month is so special for Muslims, in a welcoming and supportive space. To register, please visit the JMSU events page.
More Ways to Connect
Throughout Ramadan, ISOC and JMSU will also host additional Iftar gatherings on campus. Details of these events and how to join ISOC are available on the ISOC JMSU webpage.
