Staff Survey 2025 update: 143 actions across LJMU

In response to the findings of the 2025 staff survey, the Executive Leadership Team, University Leadership Team and services across the university have put in place owned actions, over the past twelve months, to improve the local needs colleagues highlighted in their day-to-day work.

During this time, LJMU has been recognised in the top quartile for HEIs with 1,000+ staff, by People Insight, based on our 2025 survey results.

143 actions across the university

Thanks to all colleagues who took part in the staff survey 2025 and the conversations that followed. Your feedback directly shaped LJMU's priorities and is already driving meaningful change across the university.

Following the LJMU staff survey ‘Your LJMU, Your Voice’, teams and services have put in place 143 locally owned actions.

At the university level, three key focus areas have been identified:

  • Career Development
  • Line Management
  • Health and Wellbeing

Career Development

There has been strengthened support for career development for both Academic and Professional Services colleagues, actions include:

  • Creating a clear university‑wide overview of development opportunities, a new newsletter will be launched, capturing all key development opportunities across the university.
  • Promoting mentoring and coaching and providing clarification on service offering, supported by managers at a local level. Access to the services is being streamlined, utilising MS Forms to capture key information and the individual's expectations.
  • Making better use of existing systems, including Actus and LinkedIn Learning, to support development conversations and create bespoke training courses.

Line Management

Staff feedback highlighted that effective line management and recognition make a real difference. In response, actions include:

  • Encouraging all line managers to engage with available management training, championed by the Executive Leadership Team.  The line management development programme (LEAD) has been refreshed, with HR Business Partners tailoring bespoke training to reflect local requirements.
  • Embedding a stronger culture of everyday recognition, from verbal thanks and team shout‑outs to celebrating exceptional work.  The implementation of the High Five recognition platform has enabled peer-to-peer recognition.  The university’s three core award scheme capture excellence in research, teaching and across professional services, bringing them all together in the annual staff celebration event.

Health and Wellbeing

Supporting wellbeing remains a key priority. Current actions include:

  • Review the recording model for academic allocation, making it easier to review and identify any areas of concern.
  • Implementation of local wellbeing pots that members of staff can apply for to support wellbeing initiatives at a local level.

Local action making a difference

The 143 local actions agreed across the university complement these priorities and focus on practical improvements such as communication, workload, ways of working, and team engagement. Progress will continue to be reviewed locally, with learning shared to support continuous improvement.
