New sustainable online search engine
LJMU is switching its default online search engine on staff and student devices to a green and sustainable browser.
From Monday 15 June, we will begin the switch from Google to Ecosia, an organisation that dedicates 100% of its profits to the environment by planting and protecting trees worldwide.
What does this mean?
This means that when you open Google Chrome, Edge or Safari and enter something into the search bar, this will make a search through Ecosia rather than through their standard search engines and the results would direct to Ecosia search results.
This will apply to all our LJMU-owned staff and student Windows and Mac devices.
The change will be effective immediately on all staff Windows devices; the student Windows devices and all Mac devices will start to see the change happen over the summer as machines are rebuilt.
Why Ecosia?
When making a search through Ecosia, as with all search engines, some results will be ads which generate income when users click on them.
Ecosia then uses profits from this income for environmental projects such as tree planting. They work with local communities to ensure the right trees for the area are selected, helping to restore ecosystems, sequester carbon and support regenerative farming.
As well as planting trees, Ecosia has worked to make its operations more sustainable, building solar farms that have produced double the amount of renewable energy needed to power its search engines.
So far Ecosia has generated over $101 million and planted more than 251 million trees.
By switching to Ecosia as our search engine, this is a really easy way for our staff and students to make a positive environmental impact without having to implement any changes themselves.
