Commuter students

At LJMU we are proud to welcome a diverse community of students and staff from across the UK and around the world. We’re equally proud that many local students choose to study with us.

While student accommodation is available to all of our students, we understand that some students may choose to live elsewhere and commute to campus for a variety of reasons. However you choose to access university we are committed to ensuring you feel fully connected, supported and part of our university community.

Whether you're on campus for just a few hours or staying late for events and activities, we want you to feel at home here. Take a look at the resources below to discover what’s on offer and how you can get involved.

Support services

We have a range of support services available to all of our students. Our advisors will take into account your unique circumstances when assessing your support needs.

Whether that is travelling to campus, providing care to loved ones, working alongside your studies or anything else that you might be finding difficult.

  • Our services operate a drop-in service from Monday – Friday (excluding bank holidays), 10am until 4pm in the Student Life Building (Copperas Hill) and James Parson’s Building (Byrom Street). Not all teams are available every day, but our teams will make sure you can speak to an appropriate person as soon as possible in both locations.
  • Our services also offer bookable appointments which can be booked at a specific time and location to fit in with your time on campus. We also offer telephone and virtual appointments.
  • Make the most of your time on campus by joining one of our events or workshops.
  • Follow us on Instagram to find out about services, events and giveaways.

Managing your money

For many students, keeping costs low whilst on campus is a priority. Our cost of living support webpage provides information about financial support and discounts available on campus to help you to manage your money.

We have a dedicated Money Advice team who offer financial advice and guidance, as well as hosting giveaway events throughout the year of essential products to help your money go further.

If you’re looking for employment alongside your studies you can register with UniTemps who advertise work opportunities.

As a student you may be eligible for a discount on your council tax. You can apply for a council tax exemption certificate via MyLJMU.

Socialising

There are lots of opportunities to meet other students at university beyond your area of study.

Our Students Union, JMSU, host many events and activities throughout the year for you to get involved in. Alongside clubs and societies they also provide student voice opportunities, campaigns and volunteering.

Sports and physical activity is a great way to meet new people is by attending our on-campus gym which includes state-of-the-art facilities, fitness classes and use of third-party venues across Liverpool all in one annual membership.

Study and social spaces

Across campus you’ll find a mix of quiet study areas, computer rooms, and welcoming spaces to relax between classes. Popular spaces include The Library and the Student Life Building.

Find out more about the different spaces and accessibility on campus on the Your Campus webpage.

Travel and sustainability
