Postgraduate and mature students

Find the best place to live and study

As a new postgraduate or mature undergraduate student you have a great range of accommodation options available to you while studying at LJMU.

Each year the university sets aside a number of full flats for new postgraduate or mature undergraduate students in several of the halls offered to new students. Students who choose one of these flats will therefore not have to share a living space with new undergraduates who are coming to university directly from school or college. In this context ‘mature' means students who are at least 21 years old when they first enrol at the university.

All postgraduate students are given a longer tenancy of 50 or 51 weeks as a default. Mature undergraduate students are given a 42 week tenancy as a default. Mature undergraduate students can also request a longer tenancy (50 or 51 weeks) if they wish.

September 2026 students

For the academic year 2026/27 rooms have been set aside for mature and postgraduate students in the following halls:

Bedrooms at Albert Court, Atlantic Point and Myrtle Street Apartments feature private en-suite bathrooms and are good value at £134.50, £122.50 and £147.50 per week respectively.

Bedrooms at Agnes Jones House, Marybone 1 and St. Andrew's Gardens feature a shared bathroom at a great value cost of £103, £98 and £98 per week respectively. Parking is available at Agnes Jones House, Albert Court and Atlantic Point at an additional cost.

All rooms set aside for postgraduate and mature students are let on an annual tenancy of 50/51 weeks, instead of the standard tenancy of 42 weeks. All rents quoted here are for the annual tenancy and rents for standard tenancies are shown elsewhere on our website.

The total cost for an annual tenancy will always be higher than the total cost for a standard tenancy, even though weekly rents are lower. If you are a mature undergraduate student and you do not want an annual tenancy, please contact us to discuss your options. It may be possible to place you into a flat with other older undergraduates, but this cannot be guaranteed.

If you prefer not to share your accommodation with new undergraduate students and do not want to live in any of the options listed above you should contact Liverpool Student Homes, which is owned by the three universities in Liverpool and maintains official listings of accredited private houses and flats.

PGDE and PGCE students

Students undertaking a PGDE/PGCE course require accommodation with an earlier start date due to teaching starting earlier than other postgraduate courses. For September 2026 courses, teaching starts on Thursday 3 September 2026, so our accommodation tenancies will start on or before Wednesday 2 September 2026.

Accommodation options for PGDE/PGCE students are Albert Court, Marybone 1, Myrtle Street Apartments and St. Andrew's Gardens.

All students with special requirements or who require individual advice may of course email the LJMU Accommodation Office at any time at accommodation@ljmu.ac.uk.

International postgraduate applicants should also read our page for international students, which includes information regarding guarantors.
