CPD Acute Medicine: Presentations and Management

Course aim
This module is essential for those in acute medicine seeking to elevate patient care. It equips you not only with foundational knowledge but with practical, swift decision-making skills for managing critical real-world cases.
Through case-based problem solving, you’ll learn to make defensible, informed decisions under pressure—vital in acute care where speed and precision are crucial. You’ll gain deep insight into diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, enabling you to treat, anticipate complications, and adapt to each patient's needs.
In short, this module will prepare you to excel as a knowledgeable clinician, ready to improve patient outcomes in acute medical settings.
Course content
This module will run for 15 weeks and will commence in September and January and run on a Wednesday.
There are 12 weeks of face-to-face sessions at our School of Nursing, Allied and Public Health, Tithebarn Building (L2 2ER), in the heart of Liverpool city centre.
Teaching and learning
Postgraduate Complexities in Acute Medicine and Surgery
You can also undertake this course as part of a combined award of Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) Complexities in Acute Medicine and Surgery.
The PgCert comprises three 20 credit modules:
- Acute Medicine: Presentations and Management
- Acute Surgery: Presentations and Post Operative Management
- Managing the deteriorating patient

The module will cover:
- Appropriate assessment of the patient with an acute medical presentation
- Common acute medical presentations
- Diagnostic investigations pertinent to acute medical presentations
- Developing clinical reasoning skills for defensible decision making in acute medicine
- Analysis of policies and guidance relating to acute medicine
Entry requirements

Undergraduate degree
Applicants should hold a BA/BSc (Hons) degree in a relevant subject at a 2:2 level or higher. We also welcome applications from those who can demonstrate appropriate professional registration and/or experience in a relevant clinical specialty.

Assessment
The assessment for this module culminates in week 15 with an oral conversation, where you will demonstrate your understanding and application of acute medicine principles. During this discussion, you’ll critically analyse case scenarios, showcasing your skills in patient assessment, immediate management, and evidence-based decision-making in real-time.
