Course aim

This CPD provides a critical understanding of how housing, communities, and the built environment interact. It is ideal for professionals who want to explore how housing design, planning, and policy shape sustainability and tenant wellbeing, as well as those seeking to develop inclusive approaches to community development.

Course content

Delivered face-to-face over 12 weeks, this CPD brings together housing professionals to explore the links between housing, urban planning, and community wellbeing. Sessions combine lectures, workshops, case studies, and site visits to provide a real-world perspective on housing and community challenges.

This course aims to:

  • Explore the social, economic, and political contexts influencing social housing and community development.

  • Examine how housing design, construction methods, and estate planning contribute to sustainability and tenant wellbeing.

  • Foster inclusive thinking and policy awareness by engaging with real-world housing and community challenges.

  • Encourage critical analysis of housing provision, planning frameworks, and community engagement.

  • Prepare learners to influence policy, support community resilience, and contribute to improved housing outcomes.

Teaching and learning

This CPD comprises a single 20-credit Level 7 module, delivered on campus over 12 weeks and supported by additional material on the Virtual Learning Environment (Canvas).

  • Undergraduate degree

    Applicants will normally be expected to have:

    • minimum 2:2 honours degree in a related discipline (e.g. Housing, Urban Studies, Architecture, Planning, Sociology, or Construction Management).

    OR

    • non-cognate degree plus relevant professional experience in the housing or built environment sector.

    OR

    • Substantial relevant work experience (typically 3+ years in a housing, planning, or community development role) in lieu of a formal undergraduate qualification. Admission in these cases will be subject to an interview and/or submission of a portfolio or written statement demonstrating suitability for postgraduate study.

    A clear personal or professional interest in housing, regeneration, or community development.

  • RPL
    • Applicants with appropriatelevel 7 modules or CPD creditsfrom other HEIs may be eligible for advanced standing via LJMU’s RPL procedures, subject to approval.

    • Professional qualifications from bodies such asCIH(Chartered Institute of Housing) orRTPI(Royal Town Planning Institute) may be considered where relevant.
