Experience life as a university student

Free, and open to Year 12 students in England and Wales and Year 13 students in Northern Ireland, our summer university allows students to try out subjects of interest and experience life as a university student.

Summer University is free of charge, and includes academic taster sessions, accommodation, meals and some travel costs, including return flights from Belfast for students travelling from Northern Ireland.

Participants may be eligible for a reduced offer of up to 16 UCAS Points lower than the standard entry requirements, should they subsequently apply to LJMU.

About Summer University

Across three days and two nights students will:

  • experience interactive taster sessions with academic staff and current students
  • develop transferable and academic study skills
  • strengthen their future personal statement and preparation for university study
  • enjoy evening dining and social activities
  • explore Liverpool while meeting current LJMU students and graduates
  • have a lot of fun and make new friends!

Student accommodation

Participants will be staying in an en-suite bedroom at one of our approved high quality student halls in the heart of Liverpool City Centre.

Applying to our Summer University  

To apply, students must be Year 12 (or Year 13 if from Northern Ireland) and aged 17 years old by Wednesday 8th of July 2026. We welcome all applications, but priority will be given to students who meet one or more of the below criteria.

If students:

  • are the first in their family to attend university
  • come from a low-income background
  • receive free school meals
  • have a disability (seen or unseen)
  • have experience in local authority care or caring responsibilities
  • are from a Black, Asian, or minority ethnic background
