Climate and sustainability strategy and performance
Progress to date
In 2020 we declared a climate emergency, and in 2022 published our Climate Action Plan. Actions within this plan were split into five themes: leadership, teaching, research, campus management, and community. The plan was split into three phases up until 2035.
Since the plan was launched, significant progress has been made, including:
- The establishment of an Environmental Sustainability and Energy Team.
- The development of several Delivery Plans including carbon management, biodiversity travel, and environmental sustainability communications and engagement.
- The creation of the Liverpool Research Institute for Climate and Sustainability (LiRICS).
- Securing EcoCampus Gold status.
- Securing significant external grants for decarbonisation projects, which have been carried out across the estate.
Phase 1 of the plan ended in 2025, and we are now in Phase 2. For Phase 2 we examined our actions and have updated them to build upon and streamline previous commitments and targets into one overarching Climate and Sustainability Plan.
Climate and sustainability plan
Our new Climate and Sustainability Plan sets out objectives, targets and KPIs across clearly defined workstreams, under the original five themes of our Climate Action Plan.
The Plan outlines our key commitments; how we intend to achieve them; and how we will measure and monitor our progress. The scope of the plan is carbon reduction, environmental protection, enhancement, and continual improvement, and it also identifies which UN Sustainable Development Goals our actions contribute towards.
